Who Do We Need? Realtor, Estate Sale Company, Mover, Attorney, Organizer…
Not every family needs every one of these. Part of my job is telling you which ones you can skip.
Realtor
Values the home, advises on preparation, markets it, negotiates the offers and manages the sale through closing. In a senior move, also the person keeping everybody else on the same schedule. Call first.
Elder law or estate attorney
Answers the legal questions: trusts, powers of attorney, probate, who has authority to sell. If any of those words apply to you, call early.
Organizer or senior move manager
Helps sort, decide, pack and set up the new place so it feels like home on day one. Worth it when the sorting feels overwhelming or family can’t be there.
Estate sale company
Prices and sells the contents of the home, usually for a share of the proceeds. Call before anything is thrown out or donated.
Clean-out service
Removes whatever is left after the family, the estate sale and the donations. The last step before cleaning.
Movers
Get the things that are staying in the family to the new place. Book once you know the move date and how much is actually going.
Contractor or handyman
Handles the short repair list. Short being the important word.
Title company
Confirms who owns the home, reviews trust or POA documents, and handles the closing and the money. They work in the background, but they matter.
Senior-living advisor
Helps compare communities and levels of care if the next home hasn’t been chosen yet.
This is general guidance, not legal, tax or financial advice. Every family’s situation is different. Ask an attorney or tax professional about yours.
