Downsizing When You’ve Lived in the Same House for 30+ Years
You are not behind. Nobody who has lived in one house for three decades is “ready” to move. You get ready by starting small.
Start with where you’re going
It’s much easier to decide what to keep when you know the size of the place you’re moving to. A floor plan settles a lot of debates about the dining room set.
Pick the easy room first
Not the basement. Not the room with the photo albums. Start with the guest bathroom or the linen closet. An early win makes the next room easier.
Keep, give, sell, let go
Four piles. If the family wants something, now is the time for them to say so, and to come get it. “Hold it for me” is not a pile.
Give it more time than you think
An hour or two at a time is plenty. This is physical work and emotional work at the same moment. People who try to do it in one long weekend usually end up exhausted and stuck.
You don’t have to do this alone
There are people who do this for a living: organizers, senior move managers, estate sale companies. I can tell you which ones fit your situation, and which ones you don’t need.
It’s okay that it’s hard
It’s a house full of your life. Feeling something about leaving it doesn’t mean you’re making the wrong decision.
